Season 15 hides a Deckard Cain quest that leads to Echo of Tristram, a boss encounter built around Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto appearing together. The route is easy to miss, and the required materials do not arrive on demand, so it helps to prepare your build before you start. Fast movement, strong single-target damage, and reliable survival tools matter more here than clearing every room. Keeping a few useful D4 items ready can also save time when your character needs a quick upgrade.
Begin With the Hardest Farming Route
The first thing to understand is where each splinter comes from. The Splinter of Destruction drops from Baal in Worldstone Keep, the Splinter of Terror comes from Diablo in The Labyrinth, and the Splinter of Hatred is tied to Mephisto in the Durance of Hate. These runs can feel slow on lower settings. Higher Torment levels, especially Torment 8, Torment 10, and Torment 12, give you a better chance at useful drops. Still, speed matters. A slightly weaker build that clears quickly may outperform a slower one with bigger numbers.
| Material | Boss | Location | Practical Focus | | Splinter of Destruction | Baal | Worldstone Keep | Quick route and steady boss damage | | Splinter of Terror | Diablo | The Labyrinth | Watch area attacks and movement checks | | Splinter of Hatred | Mephisto | Durance of Hate | Bring resistance and reliable sustain |
Protect Your Active Power
There is a small inventory detail that catches people out. Extra splinters can replace the Prime Evil power you are currently using. If Baal's Destruction effect is active and you interact with another Splinter of Hatred, the effect can switch to Mephisto's power. That may be useful later, but it is frustrating when it happens by accident. Before picking up or using another splinter, check the power shown on your character. A quick pause can prevent an unwanted change.
Use the Hidden Cube Recipe
After collecting all three materials, take them to the Horadric Cube. The recipe is not clearly displayed, which is why many players assume the quest has stalled. Place the Splinter of Destruction, Splinter of Hatred, and Splinter of Terror inside the Cube, then transmute them together. The materials are consumed, and the path to Echo of Tristram opens. Bring strong defensive gear, plenty of healing options, and a build that can handle several threats at once. The three bosses punish careless positioning, so do not treat the fight like a normal single-target encounter.
Quick Preparation Check
Reach a Torment level where your clear speed remains comfortable.
Keep the three splinters separate until you are ready for the Cube.
Check your active Prime Evil power before using another material.
Save defensive cooldowns for overlapping boss attacks.
Review your equipment before entering the encounter.
Echo of Tristram is designed as a preparation test as much as a boss fight. Farming the right locations, protecting your active power, and using the Cube correctly will make the process far less frustrating. Once your setup is ready, consider a final equipment check and pick up any missing D4 items buy options before stepping through the gateway, because the encounter gives you little room to recover from weak resistances or poor damage.
